We are an async, globally distributed team, building a non-trivial product and business in a very fast moving industry
We care about
- how effectively you collaborate with others and serve the team. Are you committing to your goals, in public, and meeting them?
- sequencing + prioritization — these are the highest leverage decisions you can make. Building the right thing, in the right order can get the company to its goals weeks/months faster. If it takes a few hours of AFK time to make the right decisions, choose that, it’s never not worth it. The exchange rate of good startup decision making is HRs:Weeks (that is, it’s not unreasonable for 5 hrs of thinking to save weeks of company time).
- the quality of the work you produce, and how you balance experimentation with sustainability. Some things are experiments, some things need to be built right to make future development faster and sustainable. Know the difference. Be intentional
We do not care about
- the number of hours you are at your keyboard or online. Take a walk, go to the gym, or leave early if you’ve finished everything on your plate.
Balancing work and life
- We produce critical infrastructure for people building in a very dynamic and "24 hour" industry, so while we believe in having a good work/life balance and being able to take time off, there will be plenty of times in which it will be necessary for folks to jump on to tackle issues late at night or on the weekend.
- Whenever possible we should take care to make it less likely we'll need to do out of hours work (like not doing regular releases on Fridays), but handling urgent issues is just part of the job when our constituents are constantly hacking on new projects all day, every day.
- Put another way: we don't value working more hours for the sake of just working more hours, but sometimes we'll need to work hours that aren't 9-5.
Synchronous time
As we are distributed across many time zones, our opportunities for sync time are limited, and should be seen as a valuable resource. Sync time is great for brainstorming, building alignment, working through difficult decisions and scoping a project.
Meeting Windows
In order to make scheduling easier for internal meetings and give us some overlap together, everyone on the team is expected to be available during these windows for sync time unless OOO. When scheduling you should also opt for these times first, especially if working across time zones.
10:30am to 1:30pm Eastern Time on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.
Other Meetings
- 1:1 pairing can happen outside that window but aim to schedule it and have an agenda
- External Sessions/support may happen outside of meeting windows, but are usually on the calendar for at least a day. External facing roles should expect additional meetings throughout the week.
